Wed Feb 8, 2012

No sleeping in today, we all got out for our early morning walks. Allan and I walked part of the beach then up to the Colonia where we stopped for orange juice then made our way back to the Casa de los Viajeros where  coffee with baileys was waiting for us. Thanks to Bob and Edith for looking after us, a great treat to come home to especially when there was no coffee in the house when we left.

These are some pictures of our morning:

A dead stingray without his fins - looks like they got eaten off -
hopefully it happened following his death.

These were taken of the mangrove swamp on our walk out to the colonia. Above are ducks swimming and eating,, the object below is a termite nest.

This was interesting - a closer look showed us empty egg shells on the sharp needles of this cactus. The eggs had each been blown and the empty shell placed over the needles.   A very cleaver way to protect people and animals from harm. I have not been able to come up with a reason for the yellow ribbons though.

This is where we stopped for our break on our 2 hour walk for refreshments this morning. The orange juice really hit the spot.

3 kilometers back to Puerto Morelos

This year there is construction going on in Puerto Morelos, here they are working on a bicycle path from the highway into the town. Many people use bicycles as their main mode of transport

What a unique nail apron - notice the long fringe. The purpose is to whisk away the moisture from the pouch. I must be getting old, here I am paying more attention to what the man is wearing rather than the man!

We made a visit to the market in town today.

I have no idea what this is called but it was good - a little spicy but good just the same.

Three legged dogs are a typical sight anywhere in Mexico. Dogs are allowed to roam free and as a result get hit by automobiles causing them to have various types of injuries.

When the sign indicates men at work it really means men at work! There is more construction going on in town, we have been told they are installing a new sewage system. These men are using a pick and shovel, we are also told that the average wage here for a days work is 60 Pecos - that is less than $6.00 per day in Canadian currency.

Hot Tamales,  Hot Tamales  -the salesman calls as he walks the streets of Puerto Morelos. I bought 2 today for a price of 160 Pecos, about $1.50 each. They are sooo goood!! I am not sure what the ingredients are but looks like a dough of corn flour with a mix of vegetables inside - wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked. Yummmy!

This afternoon the men worked on a new puzzle and I caught up on my blog while Edith had a nap. She was in a much better mood when she woke up. Thanks goodness. For a little person she can get rather grumpy when she gets played out. We had total silence so she could get her rest. ( She is going to clobber me when she reads this!Really she is a good sport, she takes a lot of ribbing in our 4 weeks together.|I am not sure how she tolerates us. )
