Week #12 December 23rd to 29th, 2018

Here we are at week #12 already, over have way through our vacation for this winter!

December 23 - 29, 2018

One of the displays at the Chedrauis Super Market. This is baked ham with
 pineapple topping. Looked so yummy!

Even Santa came to share time with us on Christmas Eve.

We celebrated Christmas Eve with  our Mexican friend and neighbour Claudia, her mom and sister. We also had a couple of Canadians for dinner with us too - Laura from BC and Maurice from Winnipeg. It was a pot luck dinner, new dishes for all of us to try. One of the hits was a fruit cake my aunt Maimie made and sent down with us. It was delicious, thanks Maimie!

Theresa, Dwayne and Nancy.

Laura, Claudia's mom and sister.

 The real Claudia!

 Howard and Maurice.

Christmas Day called for another feast, this time Howard and Theresa and Gaston and Louise Begin joined us. It was another wonderful get together with great food.

The kids didn't feel it was like Christmas without  a huge tree, lots of presents and snow on the ground. They returned home on the 28th( with -21 degree temperatures) to have Christmas with Nancy's family on the 29th, then on to the Island to have their own. I have not heard any more on the subject but I expect they enjoyed their own Christmas at home even though it was a few days later.

We enjoyed the kid's visit - it was wonderful having  them here with us.

Week # 11 - December 16 to 22, 2018

Getting close to Christmas!

Love to see this truck in town, it has so many kitchen gadgets on it. Just neat to browse

More new building going on in our village - not sure yet what this is going to be -
there was mention of it being apartments. Apartments are definitely needed here.

The park in the port was well lit for the Christmas season.

We went to the children's Christmas Concert in the park - lots of children
and lots of family members there to watch their performances.

This is our pool maintenance man Juan and his wife and our house
keeper Erica, with their eldest son.

Here we have Juan with their youngest son who was in the concert as a little drummer boy.

The children are patiently waiting for their turn performing.

A little spectator waiting for the show.

The show begins!!

Another little fellow in the crowd of spectators, he looks cold -
needed the hood to keep him warm.

When the performance was over each of  the children  had a Christmas stocking they took through the crowd to be filled with candy. It was fun handing out candy to them and the other children in the crowd.

This is our property manager Kris and Juan & Erica's eldest son.

A family sitting in the park enjoying the evening of entertainment.

This was a fun week - Dwayne, Nancy, Jeromy and Jess came for the week to have Christmas with us!!!! Jeromy and Dwayne helped with decorating and putting up lights,

Jess got her rest - lol.

We went out for dinner their first night here, Dwayne and Jess,

Nancy and Jeromy,

Allan and his little brother Howard,

Allan's brother Howard and his wife Theresa came this week too,
they are here until mid March.

Here is part of our crowd: Jeromy, Jess, Theresa and Nancy all resting after a big dinner.

One day Jess and I went to the "Cause For Pause" animal pound for part of a day
to volunteer. The organization is lead by Dianne Curtis, she has
between 35 and 40 dogs and an undetermined number of cats.

I was really surprised at how well the dogs get along, of course she has them separated according to their measurement on the Alpha scale.

This litter of puppies get very excited when it comes feeding time. Dianne has her way of getting them to settle before they get fed.

This sweetheart followed me around while I was in her area and she constantly whimpered and stared at me. Do you think perhaps she was wanting me to take her home? She looked like she would be a great lap dog for sure.

Jess being the cat lover she is, took to the cat house to help the other volunteer "Amy" to clean litter boxes and tidy and clean the house.

It wouldn't take much to convince Jess to come back to volunteer more of her time here.

Even cleaning the litter boxes did not discourage her.

Dwayne, Jeromy and Allan had a great experience, one day they took a tour to a neighbouring community to see how Bee Keeping is done in Mexico.

Their first stop was the stingless bees. These wooden boxes are their hive.  These are the Mayan Bee,  they produce Melipona Honey. Further information can be found here and other sites: https://www.thoughtco.com/ancient-maya-beekeeping-169364

The honey has medicinal properties and is extracted from the hive with a syringe, it is then placed in a small brown bottle  40 ml size. The honey is taken orally by eye dropper. It seems one drop a day is good for general health.

These are the regular hive bees similar to our bees in Canada.

Dwayne was quite impressed with the differences and similarities in
bee keeping compared to what he is doing at home.

Jeromy was impressed with how well two people could communicate their
common trade without knowing each other's language.

The park in the Colonial - the part of Puerto Morelos where we live has a very bright, colourful display for the Christmas season.

 Beautiful!
It does seem strange enjoying Christmas without snow and cold weather.

The men taking a few minutes to catch up after dinner.

We had dinner  one evening at one of our local restaurants. Nancy wanted to eat fish every day she was here and I think she did. We love the fish here too, it is so different than what we get back home from fresh water.

That is it for this week, time is flying by quickly.
