Up to April 30th, 2008

March 28th to 30th Allan and I attended the 10th Annual Fire Conference in North Bay – that was a great week-end. Fire Departments from all over Northern Ontario were in attendance. This is the first I have attended as I have always been working in the past and tried to use my vacation time wisely. It is great being retired – every day is a vacation day! The weather was cold and caused an appreciated lull in the running of sap so we didn’t loose any while we were away.

We have had the pleasure of having Grandchildren to visit on several occasions. One little one from Sudbury was here for 2 weeks, she kept saying she did not want to go home, but when her Dad came to get her she was so happy to see him! She was in the car ready to go home before he had time to pack everything in it for the return trip home. She calls often and is looking forward to having another visit (I am having lots of sleeps at your house Grandma!). Her little brother wants to come for the day trip – (no sleeps at Grandma’s house only at Mommy’s!) Oh they are all such little angels!

I finally sent out my Thank You letters last week to people who sent cards and attended my retirement party back in January. Sometimes I have such a difficult time trying to put something on paper. Dwayne says I get wordy. My intentions were good – I did start the letters when I returned from vacation.

Last week Allan and I started to replace the siding and windows on a rental house up the street. Dwayne has been able to give us a hand with the heavier work. The windows are all in now, the old siding removed and the Styrofoam insulation has been installed. The new siding will come next – it will be light blue vinyl siding. Our 4 year old granddaughter chose the colour. Quite a change from the house with the white siding and orange trim!

I have continued with the exercise group that meets twice a week here in town. We use exercise balls which are very cumbersome to carry to and from the sessions. One day we had a high wind and a lady lost hers – it slipped out of her grip and bounced down the street over the snow bank and disappeared never to be seen again. I think it made its way to the lake, it being frozen solid the ball had clear travelling to who knows where! The balls have been on sale at Canadian Tire often this winter so they are not expensive but it is the inconvenience of having to travel for 1 hour to get one so I came up with a solution. I have made a crochet bag type carrier that covers the ball and provides you with lots of places to hold on to the ball without trying to wrap your arms around it to carry it. I have sold my bags to other members of the group and used the money to purchase more yarn to make baby vests, bonnets and booties to take back to Mexico with me. The nurse at the clinic in Puerto Morelos was very happy with the ones I took to her this winter so I am making more for our next visit. This is an ongoing project in the evenings while watching TV.

Oh, did I mention we have made reservations at the Cabanas Puerto Morelos for next winter and booked our flights already. Both of our sons and their families will be joining us this time, each family for one week. I am so looking forward to going back, we enjoyed it so much we want to share the Puerto Morelos experience with our our sons, their wives and children.

I think this has you up to date; the next update will come a lot sooner than this one did.

So ‘till next time,

Anne

We Made Maple Syrup This Year!

March 19th we gathered our first maple sap

We collected 6 x 5 gallon pails that day and we were off to making maple syrup. This was a first for us in many many years! The last Allan worked in the sugar bush was when he was about 15 years old, they made it for sale and tapped 1500 trees – that was a lot of trees! My parents made it when we lived on the farm – I would have been about 6 years old the last time we made it. We didn’t tap a huge amount of trees as we were only making if for our own use.

This year we tapped 60 trees and made 7 gallons of syrup. The boys and their families helped with the gathering and boiling down. Clinton did not have the pleasure of being with us when we bottled but he got to enjoy the other stuff with us. It is a lot of work but for those of us who like Maple Syrup – it is worth it – a labour of love you can call it.The second week of April was the end of our maple syrup making - the season ran a little longer but by this time we had all the syrup we needed. Project completed.

Like most projects we take on this one left us with lessons learned, a lot of good memories and great pictures. I have shared some of these with you below.

Bye for now,

Anne

Sugar Bush Memories

This structure when completed will be the Sugar Shack
Here it is completed with a covering of heavy plastic. It is only
a shelter from inclemant weather, both ends are open to allow
steam from the boiling sap to escape.

Grandpa and 2 of the Grandchildren are off to prepare the treesFirst they have to drill a hole in each Maple tree

Then they tap in the sap spiles so the sap can freely run out of the tree

And attach a sap bucket to the spile to catch the sap
Once a day the sap is gathered in larger buckets and taken
to the sugar shack to be boiled down into syrup

Mmmm - it is clear like water today and tastes sooo good - like sweetened water Grandpa stokes the fire to get the pan of sap to boil

OOOOps! The first batch burned on us, did we have

fun cleaning the pan! "Dear God, please don't let Grandpa burn this batch!"Here we go again - no last minute trips to the bathroom with this one!
Grandpa has company to help keep an eye on this pan of sap

Everyone gets in on the taste test - it is like drinking juice! Sooo Gooood!
Once the sap reaches about 218 degrees F it is taken from the
big pan and filtered into a smaller pot to continue boiling until
it reaches 220 degrees F, then it is bottled.

The temperature is watched very closely!

March 1st We Arrived Home

Gadget our cat was really happy to have us back. Dwayne did take good care of her but she has her favourite people – and I spoil her more than he did – what can I say? All was well other than for a water line that froze just the night prior to our arrival. Dwayne was able to get it thawed and back in working order for us – he was a great house sitter; hope we can hire him again next year.

If anyone is looking for a good house sitter he comes highly recommended!

Can I say it was nice to be back? Mmmmm - ya kinda. The cold weather made us want to return to Puerto Morelos - meal time made us want to return to Puerto Morelos - should I go on??

We came home with lots of good memories, new friends and a strong desire to book next year's vacation in Puerto Morelos.

More updates to follow,

Take care,

Anne

What Happened After February 27t You Ask?

Oh my goodness!– 2 months have slipped by since my last update; where has the time gone??

Let’s get you caught up on my life since Feb 27th!

After leaving Buffalo we headed north and visited with Edith and Bob for a couple of days. While with them we did some more research on the family tree and visited with a distant relative in a near by nursing home. Thelma and I had never met before, although I had communicated with her about 20 years ago regarding our family ties. She is coming up 95 years of age but certainly looks a lot younger. Her mind is clear and she is in reasonably good health. Our family in common certain have enjoyed longevity along with good mental and physical health.

I have been doing family research for some time now and was quite surprised when Edith called me last summer to see if there might be a family connection between us - sure enough to our surprise there was! We have kept in touch since then and have become friends.

Next update coming very soon!

Bye for now,

Anne
