June 8, 2010 Icy Strait Point and Hoonah


This is the community of Hoonah at Icy Point Strait. They catch salmon and can it here for shipping



















While here we went kayaking for the first time ever and had a wonderful time. We have our experiences of canoeing on South Bay to be thankful for - we were the 2 oldest in the group and joined by only a few who had never kayaked before.The ability to push and pull your paddle at the same time provides one with speed and control of the vessel. We were way ahead of the rest of the group.

This port was unique - we were tendered in, this means we had to get off the ship out in the bay and were taken to dock with this vessel above. This boat comes off the ship and when they are finished with their tendering it is put back on the ship. the picture below shows the small boat being put back on the ship.





























Here is a fire we noticed on the shore as we were leaving the bay. No one gets excited about these fires - they are common
