2015 was a very exciting year for us, we purchased a house in the subdivision Villas Morelos Uno which is in the colonial of Puerto Morelos. We have been coming to this part of Mexico (the Mayan Riviera) since 2000, back in those days we stayed at all inclusive resorts, when we retired we decided to mix with the locals so we came to Puerto Morelos. It was love at first stay and we have been coming back ever since. Now seven years later we are home owners and loving it!.
Allan and I purchased the house sight unseen, our friends Abraham and Kris were given the go ahead to look after the purchase for us. Abraham found a suitable house and Kris along with the law firm she works with looked after the legal work. They did a fantastic job! The house needed some minor repairs and painting, once those tasks were complete we decided to put a pool and bbq in the back yard. Thanks to Abraham and his knowledge of good contractors in the area, the back yard has been upgraded to a courtyard and it is awesome! A little bit of work needs to be completed which is to take place today and tomorrow (Monday) - Monday is the day the water will be added to the pool!!!! Yippee - we can hardly wait - but this is Mexico - it could be a few days later. I will keep you posted for sure.
Now getting back to the beginning of our 2016 vacation. We left Manitoulin on Monday Jan 4th for our 2 month stay in our new home in Puerto Morelos.
We arrived in Espanola with temperature of -22 at the top of speed trap hill, it wasn't until we were at the bottom that I thought of taking a picture of the truck's thermometer.
Yep, that is right -21degrees C.
We made a quick stop in Espanola to pick up Allan's brother Howard, he came to Sudbury with us to bring our truck back. It would be just too costly to leave it at the airport for the 2 months.
Our first flight left Sudbury at 11:35 am so we didn't need to stay in Sudbury the night before, it seemed weird not having a hotel stay over the night before the flight. Check in was a breeze, all 4 bags of luggage was just a few ounces under the maximum weight of 50 pounds each.
The second leg of our journey from Toronto left on time and had us into Cancun at 6:45 pm, 15 minutes early.
Our great friend Kris met us at the airport and brought us to our new Casa which we have named "Casa Purda Vida" from Spanish to English translation -
Casa = House, Purda Vida = Pure Life or Good Life
Once we arrived we got our selves settled in a bit then went looking for something to eat. A short distance from our Casa there are a variety of restaurants. We bough the best hamburgers and fries West of the highway.

Tuesday was busy with buying supplies, unpacking and putting things away. What a job, I don't envy anyone moving from one house to the other, We just had a few groceries and luggage, it was exhausting, so much so that we both took a lengthy nap in the afternoon, The heat is tiring too when one isn't used to it.
Wednesday January 6th was a day and evening of great celebration here in Puerto Morelos, this community officially left the larger city of Cancun to be a city of its own. There will be many changes to be faced by the residents here in Puerto Morelos, some good and some bad.
Allan and I worked most of the day again and decided to treat ourselves to dinner in the Port and watch the festivities. We walked to the highway,(which took us about 10 minutes) where we waited for the local bus, then we thought perhaps a taxi but after we waited about 20 minutes and neither came along we decided perhaps we could walk. The walk into the Port took us about 45 minutes. There was a major traffic jam in the downtown intersection and traffic was back logged about 1.5 km! Many people were doing the same as we were, walking the distance.
El Pesquero was our restaurant of choice and it didn't disappoint us. Following dinner we took a walk about the park, met some of our old friends from past years, saw the sights among throngs of people then headed back home. Fortunately we didn't have to walk, we were able to catch a taxi first thing.
Thursday we had our hair cut by a local hairdresser (Ericka) here in the Colonia, she did a great job on Allan's, mine is a little shorter that usual (even with length measurements provided) the good thing - I won't have to have it done again before we go home. Oh and the price you can't beat - the equivalent to $6.00 Canadian each!

Friday the 8th we took walk to visit Louise and Gaston Begin, they are new homeowners here in Puerto Morelos too. Their home is still under construction with work being done in the back yard and on the roof, it has been a long and tedious process. They will have lots of stories to tell when the work is complete.
Louise and Gaston live in Manitowaning so we are neighbours in both communities - small world.
This is the new Municipal Office in the Colonia of Puerto Morelos, very impressive don't you think? Oh, and a small note for those interested, our annual taxes are equivalent to about $ Canadian. ???????? Go figure!
We had plans to go into Cancun today but a little emergency came up at our casa. Allan was first to notice the smell of rotting meat in our courtyard. Since there was nothing in our yard to cause such a stink he climbed up and looked over the wall into the neighbour's yard, and what to his wandering eyes did appear but a dead cat! Oh Gawd, now what to do? We were told to go to the municipal office to report the incident which we did but the staff hadn't moved in yet. On our way about town we came upon Diane who works with Cause4Paws her in the Colonia. She and another worker came by later in the afternoon and found that someone had come by and put lime on the animal which had reduced the smell greatly.
Dinner in tonight was Spaghetti
A little computer time before settling down with a book.
